History of Medical Institutes in Guthrie

Guthrie Hospital and Nursing Training School (1903 – 1906) – West Warner Road

A 25-bed privately owned M.D. general hospital. Original construction cost was $11,000. Sold to the Methodist Episcopal Church of Oklahoma in 1906.

Methodist Hospital
(1906 – 1931) – West Warner Road

The Methodists purchased the 25-bed non-profit general hospital from Doctors A.L. Blish and Horace Reed. On June 8, 1927, the Methodist Episcopal Church of Oklahoma laid a cornerstone for a new hospital on 19th and West Warner. The skeleton of the building was built during the early part of the depression, after which funds were depleted and the skeleton of the building stood for two decades. In May 1931, the Methodists closed their hospital and transferred its assets to the Cimmaron Valley Wesley Hospital.


Cimmaron Valley Wesley Hospital
(1938 – 1947) – West Warner Road

The framework for the new 25-bed non-profit hospital was completed in 1947. During construction, the remodeled nurse training school building was used as the hospital. The building and the framework for the unfinished building were sold to the Benedictine Sisters of the Sacred Heart on February 14, 1948.

Benedictine Heights Hospital
(Feb. 1948 – Aug. 1964) – 2001 West Warner

A 55-bed non-profit general hospital owned and operated by the Benedictine Sisters of the Sacred Heart. The original building was finally completed through a grant from the Katherine E. Price Foundation of New York. The hospital was sold in 1964 to the Sisters of Francis of Maryville, Mo., managed by St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City and was renamed Alverno Heights Hospital.

Alverno Heights Hospital
(Aug. 1, 1964 – 1972) – 2001 West Warner

The 55-bed non-profit general hospital was operated by St. Anthony Hospital of Oklahoma City after acquiring the property from the Benedictine Sisters in 1964. The hospital was sold to the Logan County Hospital Authority in 1972.

Logan County Memorial Hospital
(Sept. 1, 1972 – 1978) – 2001 West Warner

The 55-bed non-profit general hospital was owned and operated by the Logan County Hospital Authority. After acquiring the property from the Sisters of St. Francis of Maryville, Mo. in 1972, the hospital was operated by the Authority until the new Logan County Health Center was completed and opened on October 24, 1978.

Logan County Health Center
(1978-1989) – 200 S. Academy Road, Hwy. 33 West at Academy Road

This 50-bed county-owned general hospital was built at a cost of $1.7 million and financed by a general obligation bond issue. The new hospital opened October 24, 1978. In April 1984, management services for the hospital was originally contracted with IHP, an affiliate of Presbyterian Hospital, Inc. of Oklahoma City. Management of the hospital switched to HCA when they purchased Presbyterian Hospital in May 1985. The hospital was managed by HCA from May 1985 until 1992.

Logan Hospital and Medical Center
(1989-2004) – 200 S. Academy Road, Hwy. 33 West at Academy Road

The 50-bed county-owned general hospital was managed by HCA until 1992. The Hospital Authority is the controlling force. Management services were contracted to Baptist Health Care from 1992 until 1995. HCA or Quorum resumed management in 1995. At this time LHMC owned and operated Logan First Crescent Rural Health, Logan First Guthrie Rural Health, Logan First Home Health, Logan Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility, Logan Hospital P.M. Clinic, Logan Hospital Medicaid Clinic, Logan First Hospital Out-Patient Surgery Clinic, and Logan Hospital Occupational Health Clinic.

Logan Medical Center
(2004 – Present) -200 S. Academy Road, Hwy, 33 West at Academy Road

In 2001, the hospital was designated as a Critical Access Hospital and became licensed for 25 beds. In 2004, Logan Hospital and Medical Center made a minor name change. The three clinics owned and operated by the hospital also received a name change. All three clinics now fall under the umbrella of The Center for Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. All other services for the hospital fall under the name of Logan Medical Center.

Chief Executive Officer: Shawn Morrow – (2004 – 2007)

As growth in services at LMC continue, a new physician clinic opened in south Logan County, located on Waterloo Road near Broadway Avenue. This clinic will be a Center for Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. With the changes and addition of new physicians, the clinic located at 19th street will be called the Center for Family Medicine.
